Area
Ulverston is a quaint, historic market town with a cobblestone main street. It has a wide variety of locally owned stores, cafes, and pubs serving up hearty fare and cold ones alike. There is a wide variety of restaurants serving everything from gourmet cuisine to classic pub fare. Throughout the summer, Ulverston hosts a variety of festivals, from a flag-raising and walking festival to an art and music festival, and in late November, the town hosts the world-famous Dickensian Christmas festival. In addition to being the place where Stan Laurel was born, it also holds the record for the largest foam pie fight in the world. There are wonderful walks in the countryside around the town, with sights such as Morecambe Bay and the southern Lake District. The deepest, widest, and shortest canal in the world can be found here, and it makes for a lovely afternoon stroll with a pub and bay views at its conclusion. Access to the park's many sights is a breeze. The sandy beaches and excellent birdwatching along the Furness Coast are a major draw. Popular Birkrigg Common, with its breath-taking vistas of Morecambe Bay, is also close by, as is the South Lakes Wild Animal Park and Lakes Windermere and Coniston.
Region
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
