The quantity of blue on display in Neptune isn’t for the faint-hearted. In all seriousness, it’s this theme that actually elevates the place and makes it unique. It’s certainly small – the lack of a living room isn’t ideal, it’s true – but the decorations, largely inspired by the hosts travels, are all rather tasteful, and contribute to the individuality of the place. The location’s also worth mentioning – it’s not particularly central, but the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano is right there, as is the Egyptian obelisk, which is the largest in the world.

About Tuscolano
Beyond the railway station, Tuscolano doesn’t have architecture to match some of the other parts of the city, but its streets are filled with green, and it has several nice restaurants and a couple of lovely parks. It’s generally a very safe area, with great transport links as the metro runs into the city along Via Appia Nuova - you can get all the way to the Vatican without changing lines.

This church is known for its unusual circular form as well as the gruesome frescos that depict scenes of torture inflicted upon Christian martyrs.

Eat carbonara at da Danilo
The carbonara served in this hidden gem off Piazza Vittorio has a cult following, as does the cacio and pepe tossed in a wheel of parmesan before being served.

Step into a Fitzgerald novel at Gatsby Cafe

Marvel at San Giovanni in Laterano
