The city is perhaps best known for its cathedral, an imposing structure the history of which dates back to the 7th century. Just outside the city, (under 4 miles) the atmospheric ruins of Fountains Abbey make for a wonderful day trip, whilst the Yorkshire Dales are just 21 miles away providing a spectacular backdrop for enjoying relaxing walks.
