Great Ayton is famous for being the boyhood home of Captain Cook and is also mentioned in the Domesday Book.
There are two village greens, the High Green and the Low Green, with the River Leven running alongside, making it a popular picnic spot in the summer months. The iconic Roseberry Topping, a 330 metre hill is just north of the village and commands a spectacular view.
